If you’ve ever watched a performance and thought “I’d love to try that, but I wouldn’t know where to start,” you’re not alone. Whether you’re a parent looking for your child’s first class or an adult ready to try something new, choosing the right dance style can feel like a big decision.
The good news? There’s no single “best” dance for beginners — it’s all about finding what feels right for you.
Ballet – The Perfect Foundation
Ballet is often where many dancers begin, and for good reason. It builds balance, posture and coordination — skills that help with every other dance style. At AIM, we start our youngest dancers in Melody Movement and My First Ballet classes, where they learn the basics through imagination, music and play. For older beginners, ballet remains an excellent way to develop strength, flexibility and confidence.
Tap – For Rhythm and Fun
If your dancer loves music, rhythm and making a bit of noise, tap dance is a brilliant place to start. It teaches timing, quick thinking and coordination — all wrapped up in fun, upbeat routines that make everyone smile. Tap also helps build confidence for performing in front of others.
Modern and Jazz – Expressive and Energetic
Modern Theatre and Jazz are ideal for creative children and teens who enjoy storytelling through movement. These classes mix contemporary styles with strong technique, giving dancers freedom to express themselves while learning the foundations of performance. It’s also a great stepping stone for students who want to progress into Musical Theatre.
Acro – For the Adventurous
If your child is the type to cartwheel through the kitchen, Acro Dance might be their perfect fit. It combines dance and gymnastics, building flexibility, strength and spatial awareness in a safe, structured way. Beginners are guided carefully through progressions, so no experience is needed to start.
Street and Commercial – For Style and Confidence
For dancers who love performing to chart music and learning the kind of moves seen in music videos, Street and Commercial Dance are great entry points. These styles are fast-paced, energetic and packed with personality — perfect for building confidence and individuality.

The Best Dance is the One They Enjoy
Every dancer is different, and that’s what makes it special. Some children thrive with structure and discipline, others light up with rhythm and performance. The best starting point is simply what excites them most.
At Artists in Motion, our teachers are experts at helping new dancers find the class that fits their personality and goals. You can even use our Class Finder Tool
to discover options based on age and interests.
✨ Every dancer’s journey begins somewhere — the key is to just take that first step.
