Modern Dance Classes for Children Near Canterbury

Expressive, technical and dynamic — Modern builds strength, flexibility and performance quality.

What Is Modern Dance?

Modern is a versatile style drawing on Ballet foundations with contemporary and jazz influences. It develops clean lines, grounded movement, expressive performance and musicality — perfect for children who enjoy both technique and storytelling through dance.

At Artists in Motion, our Modern classes focus on safe alignment, strength and flexibility while encouraging individuality and creative expression.

Why Modern Is Good for Children

  • Technique & control: Builds core strength, turnout awareness, balance and line.
  • Flexibility & mobility: Structured stretching supports healthy range of motion.
  • Expression & confidence: Choreography encourages storytelling and stage presence.
  • Musicality: Children learn phrasing, dynamics and quality of movement.
  • Transferable skills: Supports Ballet, Jazz, Theatre and Contemporary with strong foundations.
  • Injury-aware training: Emphasis on correct technique and progressive skills.

Each class includes warm-up and alignment work, floor exercises, travelling progressions from the corner (walks, kicks, turns and leaps), centre combinations and choreography. We progress at a steady pace so every dancer develops safely and confidently.

  • Juniors (7–10 years): Technique building: kicks, balances, first turns and simple leaps.

Modern – Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between Modern and Contemporary?

Modern uses strong technical foundations (including Ballet and jazz influences) with clean lines and structured progressions. Contemporary is often more experimental and floor-based. Our Modern classes provide an excellent base for both.

Will Modern help with other dance styles?

Yes — Modern strengthens posture, control and musicality that benefit Ballet, Jazz, Theatre and Street.

Do you offer trial classes?

We don’t offer free trials — the trial lesson is included in the cost of the first class to provide a full, authentic experience within the regular group setting.

Ready to Start Modern?

Your child’s first lesson serves as their trial and is included in the cost of the first class. It’s the best way to meet the teacher, join the group and experience the style properly.
